Cat Health Insurance Things To Consider Before Choosing A Plan
While shopping for cat health insurance does not have as many things to watch out for as dog insurance, there are some things you should be aware of.
As noted on the dog insurance page, did you know that mixed breed cats tend to be healthier and live longer than their purebred counterparts? It is true and insurance companies are aware of this. In my review of pet insurance policies, I found more than one who had age restrictions of purebred pets over mixed breeds.
In addition, some pet insurance policies have exclusions for breed specific illnesses in cats. If you are looking at a company with this type of plan, make sure your mixed breed kitty does not fall under the exclusion just because her grandmother was a purebred Siamese, for example.
Make sure your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations. Many of the policies I reviewed had exclusions for diseases that could be prevented from vaccines. Some will even deny claims if your pet is not taken for annual checkups (even if the plan does not offer coverage for routine wellness care).
If Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and/or Feline Leukemia Virus (FELV) has been noted, treated or diagnosed, prior to the inception of your policy, or within the waiting period for illness coverage, no illness coverage is available from any company I researched. Some will still offer accident coverage for your pet.
